NEWS RELEASE – 50 TH ANNUAL FLAG DAY PARADE

Sponsored by the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 – 1968-2017

This year marks the 50 th Anniversary of the Saratoga-Wilton Elks #161 Flag Day Parade. In 1968, the intention of the parade founders was to pay tribute to the American Flag and promote a sense of patriotism in the community.

Following in that tradition, over the years the Elks have held a Drum and Bugle Corps competition (1978), and have honored all branches of the military including the crew of the USS Saratoga following the Persian Gulf War (1991), Medal of Honor recipients (1998), US Navy in their “Port Call Saratoga” event (2014), Vietnam and Vietnam Era Veterans on the 50 th Anniversary of the Vietnam War (2015), and this year we are proud to honor our New York State Troopers on their 100th Anniversary.

This annual community event will be a five division parade that consists of color guards from active military and veteran’s organizations, vintage military and civilian vehicles, youth sports groups, the Girl and Boy Scouts, community organizations, and emergency and municipal representation.

The line-up this year will include the Polish-American String Band-A Philadelphia Mummers Tradition since 1933, the Avant Garde Alumni Drum Line, the Corinth High School Marching Band, the Fyfes & Drumms of Olde Saratoga, the Galloway Gaelic Pipes and Drums, the Galway High School Band, the Keystone Kops from the Troy Oriental Shrine Temple, the Mayfield Central School Marching Band, the Racing City Chorus, the Schenectady Pipe Band, the South Glens Falls High School Marching Band, the Uncle Sam Chorus, and the Union Fire Company #2 Marching Band.

Major General (Retired) Michael R. Van Patten will be the Honorary Grand Marshal and members of the Saratoga-Wilton Elks who have 50+ years of membership will be the Grand Marshals for this historical event.
